Last month’s reveal of Divinity has led to a sharp rise in sales for both Baldur’s Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin 2, according to developer Larian.

Divinity, unveiled at The Game Awards in December with a highly talked-about trailer, is Larian’s next role-playing game following the massive success of its 2023 Dungeons & Dragons-themed title. Baldur’s Gate 3, in particular, has demonstrated extraordinary longevity—on Steam, it still regularly draws peak concurrent player counts above 100,000, despite being over two and a half years old.

Meanwhile, Divinity: Original Sin 2, released in 2017, has also seen a notable surge in players since the Divinity announcement, with peak concurrent numbers climbing into the tens of thousands over the past few weeks. (If you’re curious about what Divinity is, IGN’s quick guide offers a great overview.)

Larian’s CEO Swen Vincke says it’s not just existing owners returning—the game is attracting a wave of new buyers, with many purchasing both titles for the first time.

“Sales for both BG3 and D:OS2 have been incredible since the Divinity announcement,” Vincke said. “D:OS2 had its best month since its 2017 release. Wish I’d removed the squirrel in time :)”

While multiplayer live service games typically sustain large player bases over years—relying on revenue from battle passes, cosmetics, and DLC—Steam’s top 10 most-played games are dominated by such titles like Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, and PUBG.

Yet some single-player games defy this norm. Bethesda’s RPGs, including Skyrim and Fallout, consistently rank among Steam’s most popular. CD Projekt’s The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 remain wildly popular years after launch. And Baldur’s Gate 3 stands at the pinnacle of single-player experiences, with fresh excitement around all things Larian, fueled by the Divinity reveal.

Speaking of Divinity, Larian recently hosted a Reddit AMA to answer fan questions. Here’s everything we learned about Divinity from it.
