There's a New Game of Thrones Illustrated Edition Coming in November, but Still No Winds of Winter

Author: Connor May 28,2025

George R.R. Martin recently delighted fans with an update on his blog, but it wasn't the eagerly awaited news about *The Winds of Winter*. Instead, he unveiled the cover for the upcoming illustrated edition of *A Feast for Crows*, the fourth book in the *A Song of Ice and Fire* series to receive this special treatment. The artwork for this edition will be crafted by the talented Jeffrey R. McDonald.

*A Feast for Crows: The Illustrated Edition* is scheduled to hit the shelves on November 4, 2025. Fans can secure their copy by preordering from popular retailers such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Target, among other top online bookstores.

This news is particularly exciting for collectors of the illustrated editions. The last book to receive this treatment was *A Storm of Swords* back in November 2020, marking a five-year wait for the next illustrated release. Adding to the allure of this new edition, it will feature a foreword by Joe Abercrombie. Martin's blog promises that some of the interior illustrations will be shared later this spring, building anticipation ahead of the book's release. For those new to the series or looking to start their collection, the first three illustrated editions of *A Song of Ice and Fire* are already available.

What About The Winds of Winter?

For fans still holding out for *The Winds of Winter*, the wait may continue indefinitely. In a December 2024 interview, Martin admitted the sobering possibility that he might not complete *The Winds of Winter* in his lifetime. This follows his November 2023 update where he confirmed having written 1,100 pages of the book. While this news is disheartening for those who've waited nearly 14 years, there remains some hope that the series could be finished by another author. With the fourth illustrated edition on the horizon, it appears likely that all five special editions will be completed before *The Winds of Winter* sees the light of day.
