In the early stages of *Avowed*'s main quest, the Envoy encounters a tragic fate as they become the victim of an assassination. Through clever detective work alongside Kai and Marius in Paradis, you uncover that your assassin is none other than Ygwulf, a member of the Paradisan Rebels who fiercely oppose Aedyr's presence in the area. As the Envoy of the emperor, you are a prime target for their cause.
Your journey leads you to track down Ygwulf and his group to their underground hideout. Prepare for a challenging battle as you clear the area of numerous enemies and navigate platforming sections. Be sure to stock up on Health Potions and equip your best gear before venturing into this dungeon. As you explore, you may come across documents that shed light on Ygwulf's true intentions and his growing remorse. Initially driven by what he believed to be divine orders, Ygwulf's misguided visions lead him to question his actions. Whether you find these documents or not, Ygwulf will express his regret and willingness to face justice when you confront him at the end of the quest.
What Happens If You Spare Ygwulf or He Turns Himself In?
Choosing to have Ygwulf turn himself in to the Inquisitor of the Steel Garrote is the least favorable option. If you send him to face Inquisitor Lödwyn, he will likely suffer a painful death. Moreover, this choice yields fewer rewards compared to other options. On the other hand, if you decide to spare Ygwulf, he will offer you 625 Copper Skeyt and some Adra as a token of gratitude for your mercy. Although these resources won't change your life, they can be beneficial. However, despite your decision to spare him, Ygwulf's fate is sealed, and he will meet his demise later in the story.
Why You Should Kill Ygwulf in Avowed
Given that Ygwulf's fate is inevitable, opting to kill him by selecting the Attack option in dialogue is the most advantageous choice. This decision leads to a boss fight, providing valuable combat experience for future encounters in *Avowed*. Furthermore, defeating Ygwulf grants you the best loot among the available options. You can claim currency, Adra, and his unique armor set, Blackwing, from his body. The Blackwing armor not only looks impressive but also offers significant stealth advantages. It provides a +30% Damage boost when attacking from stealth and a 25% Movement Speed increase when crouching, making it easier to sneak past enemies.
Does Ygwulf’s Fate Affect the Story in Avowed? SPOILER WARNING
Although Ygwulf appears early in the game, his fate has a subtle impact on *Avowed*'s ending. After completing the final gameplay section, you will see artwork and hear narration that highlight how your decisions have influenced the world of Eora and the Living Lands. Regardless of your efforts to unify and bring peace to the Living Lands, Ygwulf's death will always occur, radicalizing the Paradisan Rebellion and ensuring they continue as a violent opposition to your efforts even after the credits roll.
