Two Zenless Zone Zero voice actors, Emeri Chase (Soldier 11) and Nicholas Thurkettle (Lycaon), claim they learned of their replacement via the game's patch notes. This situation highlights the ongoing conflict between SAG-AFTRA and the video game industry over the use of generative AI in replicating voice actor performances. While Zenless Zone Zero, developed by HoYoverse, isn't directly subject to the strike (pre-dating its commencement on July 25, 2024), the actors chose not to sign new contracts, citing solidarity with striking union members and the lack of SAG Interim Agreement protections regarding AI.
Chase explained on Bluesky that while non-union projects aren't technically "struck," they lack the crucial AI protections the union is fighting for. Many actors are voluntarily forgoing work on such projects to support the union's efforts. Chase knew replacement was a possibility but hoped HoYoVerse would wait until their return. Thurkettle, a non-union member, expressed similar surprise and emphasized his belief that AI's potential impact on the industry warrants a stand, even at the cost of his role. HoYoVerse has been contacted for comment.
This isn't an isolated incident. Activision previously confirmed recasting for Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 Zombies mode, replacing Zeke Alton (William Peck) and Julie Nathanson (Samantha Maxis). While Alton didn't object to the recasting itself, he expressed concern about the lack of credit for the replacement actor potentially misrepresenting his abilities.
