Pesten With Cards: A Dutch Card Game Explained
Pesten With Cards, literally translating to "Bullying with Cards," is a classic Dutch card game similar to international favorites like Mau-Mau, Crazy Eights, and Uno. The objective is simple: be the first to discard all your cards. A crucial element is remembering to declare "Last Card" before playing your final card; forgetting this incurs a two-card penalty.
Gameplay involves multiple decks, potentially including Jokers. Each player receives seven cards, with the remainder forming a draw pile. The top card of the draw pile is revealed to start the game. Players take turns (clockwise) playing cards matching either the number or suit of the top card on the discard pile. Jokers and Jacks are exceptions, playable on any card. If a player can't match, they draw a card from the draw pile. If the drawn card is playable, they have the option to play it immediately.
The "Last Card" Rule:
When down to one card, players must click the "Last Card" button to announce their status. Failing to do so before playing the winning card results in a two-card penalty, and the winning card isn't played. Incorrectly declaring "Last Card" also results in a penalty. The button can be pressed proactively, even before it's a player's turn. Note that special cards (detailed below) cannot be used as the final card.
Special Cards and Their Effects:
Each card played triggers a specific action, with variations common in the Netherlands. The game allows for customization of these actions in the options menu. Here are the standard effects:
-
Joker: The next player draws five cards. Each subsequent Joker played adds another five cards to the penalty. A player drawing cards cannot play any of them on their turn.
-
Two: The next player draws two cards. Each subsequent Two played adds two more cards to the penalty. If enabled in the options, a Joker can be played on a Two, adding five cards to the penalty. However, a Two cannot be played on a Joker. Players drawing cards cannot play any of them on their turn.
-
Seven: The player must immediately play another card. The "Last Card" rule applies if this is the player's last card. If unable to play another card, they draw one from the draw pile.
-
Eight: The next player skips their turn. In two-player games, the current player gets another turn.
-
Ten: Each player passes one card to the player on their left.
