This concludes my retro game eShop series, primarily due to a dwindling supply of retro consoles boasting diverse game libraries. However, I've saved the best for last: the PlayStation. Sony's inaugural console exceeded all expectations, amassing a legendary game library that continues to see re-releases. While these titles once challenged Nintendo's dominance, they're now enjoyed across various platforms. Here are ten personal favorites (in no particular order):
Klonoa: The Door to Phantomile – Klonoa Phantasy Reverie Series ($39.99)
Klonoa, a deserving yet underrated title, stands out as a successful 2.5D platformer. Players control a charming floppy-eared creature navigating a dream world to thwart a perilous threat. It features vibrant graphics, responsive gameplay, memorable bosses, and a surprisingly impactful narrative. While the PlayStation 2 sequel is slightly inferior, both games are essential.
Final Fantasy VII ($15.99)
A landmark title, Final Fantasy VII introduced the JRPG genre to a wider Western audience, becoming Square Enix's greatest success and propelling the PlayStation to the top. While a remake exists, the original Final Fantasy VII offers a unique experience, albeit with noticeable polygonal limitations. Its enduring appeal remains evident.
Metal Gear Solid – Master Collection Version ($19.99)
Another PlayStation heavyweight, Metal Gear Solid revitalized a dormant franchise. While later entries became more eccentric, the original remains a compelling and enjoyable experience, less philosophical and more action-oriented. The PlayStation 2 sequels are also available on Switch.
G-Darius HD ($29.99)
G-Darius successfully transitioned Taito's classic shoot 'em up series into 3D. Though its polygonal graphics haven't aged flawlessly, the vibrant colors, engaging enemy capture mechanic, and inventive bosses create a memorable shooter.
Chrono Cross: The Radical Dreamers Edition ($19.99)
While Chrono Cross faced the daunting task of following Chrono Trigger, it stands on its own merits as a clever and visually stunning RPG. Despite some underdeveloped characters, its large cast and exceptional soundtrack make it a worthwhile experience.
Mega Man X4 – Mega Man X Legacy Collection ($19.99)
While personal bias influences my appreciation for Mega Man games, Mega Man X4 stands out for its superior design compared to its predecessors. The Legacy Collections offer a chance to experience this standout entry and others in the series.
Tomba! Special Edition ($19.99)
A surprisingly first-party Sony title, Tomba! blends platforming and adventure elements. Despite its initially lighthearted nature, it presents a challenging experience. The game's creator also worked on Ghosts ‘n Goblins, hinting at its underlying complexity.
Grandia – Grandia HD Collection ($39.99)
Though originally a SEGA Saturn title, the PlayStation port forms the basis of this HD release. Grandia, sharing creators with Lunar, offers a bright and cheerful adventure, contrasting with the prevalent Evangelion-inspired RPGs of the time. Its satisfying combat system is a highlight.
Tomb Raider – Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft ($29.99)
Lara Croft's PlayStation debut, the original Tomb Raider, emphasizes tomb raiding over action. This remastered collection offers all three initial games, allowing players to experience the franchise's evolution.
moon ($18.99)
A Japanese exclusive until recently, moon deconstructs the typical RPG formula. More of an adventure game, it features unconventional gameplay and a thought-provoking narrative.
