NetEase's upcoming open-world RPG, formerly known as Project Mugen, has been officially renamed Ananta. First unveiled at Gamescom 2023, the game recently released a new trailer, promising further details on December 5th. Until then, you can view the teaser below:
The Reason Behind the Name Change Remains a Mystery
While developers haven't commented on the name change, "Ananta" translates to "infinite" in Sanskrit, mirroring the meaning of the original title, "Mugen." The Chinese title also supports this interpretation. The gaming community is divided on the decision, but generally relieved the project hasn't been cancelled.
Comparisons are already being drawn between Ananta and Hotta Studio's upcoming RPG, Neverness to Everness. Ananta's trailer, while visually impressive, lacks gameplay footage, giving Neverness to Everness a perceived advantage for some players. However, many find Ananta's visuals more appealing.
A Curious Turn of Events
Adding to the intrigue, the development team has deleted all previous social media accounts, including a YouTube channel with over 100,000 subscribers and millions of views. Only their Discord server remains, simply renamed to reflect the title change. This unusual move has left many gamers puzzled.
Ananta casts players as an "Infinite Trigger," a paranormal investigator battling supernatural chaos. The game features characters such as Taffy, Bansy, Alan, Mechanika, and Dila.
