Recent reports from video game market research firm Niko Partners suggest a mobile Final Fantasy XIV game is in the works, a joint venture between Square Enix and Tencent, slated for release in China. Let's delve into the details of this potential collaboration between these gaming giants.
Square Enix and Tencent Team Up for Potential FFXIV Mobile Game
Confirmation Still Pending
Niko Partners' latest report highlights 15 games approved by China's National Press and Publication Administration (NPPA) for release within the country. Among them, a mobile version of Square Enix's popular MMO, Final Fantasy XIV, developed by Tencent, is listed. Other notable titles include a mobile and PC version of Rainbow Six, along with two Marvel-based games (Marvel Snap and Marvel Rivals), and a mobile game based on Dynasty Warriors 8.
While rumors of Tencent's involvement in a Final Fantasy XIV mobile adaptation circulated last month, neither Tencent nor Square Enix have officially confirmed the project.
According to Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad's August 3rd X (formerly Twitter) post, the FFXIV mobile game is anticipated to be a standalone MMORPG, distinct from its PC counterpart. However, he emphasized that this information stems largely from industry speculation and lacks official confirmation.
Given Tencent's significant presence in the mobile gaming market, this rumored partnership aligns with Square Enix's declared strategy of expanding its flagship titles, like Final Fantasy, across multiple platforms. Square Enix announced this multiplatform approach earlier in May, signaling a more aggressive expansion into diverse gaming markets.
