Following the success of Psychonauts 2, Double Fine has been quietly developing a new title, which was unveiled today during the Xbox Games Showcase. The game, titled Keeper, places players in control of a sentient, ambulatory lighthouse guided by a charmingly comical bird.
The reveal trailer depicts a whimsical bird landing on top of a lighthouse, which suddenly grows slender legs and begins trekking across a vibrant landscape. While it appears the bird is aiding or even piloting the structure, many questions remain unanswered: What is the lighthouse searching for? How did it gain the ability to walk? What is the true nature of its bond with the bird? The world it traverses is unmistakably surreal, echoing the enchanting, dreamlike quality characteristic of Double Fine’s previous creations.
As unusual as the premise may seem, expectations are high for Keeper, given Double Fine's stellar track record. Psychonauts 2 earned an 8/10 from IGN, with the reviewer praising its "weird and wonderfully written story, filled with nuanced characters that were easy to love." They also commended the studio for "expanding the universe with both epic and personal stakes, all while preserving the joyous spirit of a childhood adventure."
Keeper is scheduled to launch on October 17 for PlayStation 5, Xbox, and PC.
