NCSoft Scraps Horizon MMORPG "Project H"

NCSoft's ambitious Horizon MMORPG, internally codenamed "H," has been cancelled, according to a January 13, 2025 report from South Korean news outlet MTN. The cancellation follows a company-wide "feasibility review" that also resulted in the termination of other undisclosed projects (codenamed "J"). The report further states that key developers assigned to "Project H" have departed NCSoft, with remaining team members reassigned to other company initiatives. The removal of "H" and "J" from NCSoft's organizational chart solidifies the cancellation.

While NCSoft and Sony have yet to officially comment, the future of "Project H" remains uncertain. The possibility of another publisher or development team acquiring the project's assets and continuing its development is currently unknown.

Separate Horizon Online Project Still Underway

This news contrasts sharply with the ongoing development of a separate Horizon online multiplayer game by Guerrilla Games, internally referred to as the "Online Project." Guerrilla Games publicly announced their intentions for this project in a December 2022 Twitter (X) post, seeking developers to join their Amsterdam team. The project is described as featuring "a new cast of characters and a unique stylized look."

Further evidence of the multiplayer game's development comes from job postings, including a November 2023 listing for a Senior Combat Designer, hinting at challenging, large-scale combat encounters designed for multiple players. A recent January 2025 job posting for a Senior Platform Engineer reveals Guerrilla Games anticipates a player base of over one million, further suggesting a large-scale online experience.

Sony's Partnership with NCSoft

The November 28, 2023 announcement of a strategic partnership between Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) and NCSoft adds another layer of complexity. While the cancelled Horizon MMORPG is a setback, this partnership may open doors for future collaborations, potentially bringing other Sony titles to mobile platforms.
