Simu Liu, the star of Marvel's Shang-Chi, is reportedly attempting to resurrect the cancelled Sleeping Dogs film adaptation. Newsweek reported Liu's response to a fan on X/Twitter, stating he's actively "working with the rights holders to bring Sleeping Dogs to the big screen."
The project, initially announced in 2017 with Donnie Yen attached to star, vanished a year later. Recently, Yen confirmed its cancellation, citing years of invested time, effort, and personal funds, ultimately expressing frustration with the unpredictable nature of Hollywood.
Liu's intervention reignites hope for the Hong Kong-set action franchise. However, the success of his efforts in securing the rights or moving the project forward remains uncertain.
The original Sleeping Dogs video game, released on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC, follows Detective Wei Shen's undercover mission within a Hong Kong Triad. Critically acclaimed (earning an 8/10 from IGN), the game's success, despite its positive reception, failed to generate any sequels.
