DC Studios co-chief James Gunn addresses online criticism regarding Superman's expression during a flight sequence in a recently released TV spot.
A new 30-second promotional video showcased scenes including Lex Luthor near the Fortress of Solitude and Superman performing a barrel roll during flight. The latter scene sparked debate, with some viewers commenting on Superman's seemingly unnatural facial stillness amidst the wind-blown hair and cape. Speculation ranged from technical issues to "wonky CGI."
However, Gunn clarified on Threads that the shot utilized no CGI on Superman's face. He attributed the appearance to the close-up wide-angle lens used and confirmed the authenticity of both the Svalbard location (where filming took place) and David Corenswet's performance. The seemingly knowing smirk is, according to Gunn, entirely natural.
Despite Gunn's explanation, online discussion persists, with comparisons drawn to the flying Adam Warlock scene in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 (also directed by Gunn). Regardless of this specific debate, anticipation for the Superman film remains high. The film, the inaugural entry in the DCU's "Gods and Monsters" chapter, is slated for a July 11, 2025 theatrical release.
