Reviews & Mini-Views
Ace Attorney Investigations Collection ($39.99)
The Nintendo Switch has given us a second chance at many classic games, and now the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection joins the ranks. This collection brings us Miles Edgeworth's two adventures following Trials & Tribulations, finally localizing the previously untranslated title. The sequel cleverly expands on the original's plot, enhancing the overall experience. Playing as Edgeworth offers a fresh perspective from the prosecution's standpoint. While the core mechanics remain similar – searching for clues, questioning witnesses, solving cases – the unique presentation and Edgeworth's personality add a distinct flavor. The pacing may feel less structured than other Ace Attorney titles, leading to occasional fatigue, but fans of the series will undoubtedly enjoy this sub-series. If the first game seems slow, persevere – the second is significantly better and provides context to the first.
Bonus features are generous, including an art and music gallery, a story mode for relaxed playthroughs, and selectable original/updated graphics and soundtracks. A convenient dialogue history feature is a welcome addition.
The Ace Attorney Investigations Collection provides a compelling contrast between the two games, creating a rewarding overall experience. The official localization of the second game is a major achievement, and the extra features elevate the package. With this release, nearly every Ace Attorney game (excluding the Professor Layton crossover) is now available on Switch. If you've already enjoyed the other titles, this is a must-have.
SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5
Gimmick! 2 ($24.99)
A sequel to Gimmick! is unexpected, but welcome! Developed by Bitwave Games, this faithful follow-up to the NES classic delivers six lengthy, challenging physics-based platforming levels. The difficulty is steep, but an easier mode is included for those seeking a less demanding experience. Yumetaro's star attack returns, serving as weapon, vehicle, and puzzle-solving tool. New collectibles unlock customization options, rewarding players for tackling difficult optional sections.
While a quick playthrough is possible, the game remains challenging. Frequent deaths are to be expected, but generous checkpoints mitigate frustration. The charming visuals and music help keep the experience enjoyable, despite the difficulty. Gimmick! 2 successfully builds upon its predecessor without losing its own identity. Fans of the original and challenging platformers will appreciate this sequel. However, casual players should be aware of the high difficulty.
SwitchArcade Score: 4.5/5
Valfaris: Mecha Therion ($19.99)
Valfaris: Mecha Therion boldly shifts from the original's action-platforming to a shoot 'em up style reminiscent of Lords of Thunder. Surprisingly, this change works well, though the Switch's hardware occasionally struggles to maintain optimal performance. This shouldn't detract significantly from the intense action, memorable soundtrack, and unsettling visuals.
The weapon system adds a strategic layer. The main gun depletes energy, requiring the use of a melee weapon to recharge it, while a third weapon adds further variety. Mastering the weapon management and dashing is key to survival.
While different from its predecessor, Valfaris: Mecha Therion maintains a similar atmosphere. It's a stylish, heavy metal-infused shoot 'em up that avoids common genre pitfalls. Performance may be better on other platforms, but the Switch version remains enjoyable.
SwitchArcade Score: 4/5
Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash ($44.99)
Licensed games often cater to fans, and Umamusume: Pretty Derby – Party Dash is no exception. It delivers ample fan service, boasting strong writing and meta-systems that reward dedicated players. However, the appeal for non-fans is limited. The game offers a small selection of repetitive mini-games, and the narrative will only resonate with those familiar with the source material.
Even for fans, the game might feel unbalanced, prioritizing visual and auditory elements over gameplay depth. While the presentation and unlockables are strong, the limited gameplay might lead to quick burnout.
SwitchArcade Score: 3/5
Sunsoft is Back! Retro Game Selection ($9.99)
This collection showcases a lesser-known side of Sunsoft, offering three charming 8-bit titles. It includes Firework Thrower Kantaro’s 53 Stations of the Tokaido, Ripple Island, and The Wing of Madoola. Each game features save states, rewind, display options, and an art gallery. The full localization of all three games, especially Ripple Island, is a significant accomplishment.
The games vary in quality. 53 Stations can be frustrating, while Ripple Island is a solid adventure game, and The Wing of Madoola is ambitious but uneven. None are groundbreaking, but they offer a unique glimpse into Sunsoft's Japanese catalog.
Fans of Sunsoft and retro gaming will appreciate this collection. The careful handling of each game and the full localization make this a valuable addition for those interested in exploring lesser-known titles.
