The beloved Dungeons & Dragons show, Critical Role, is on the cusp of launching its first major video game, with CEO Travis Willingham hinting that an announcement could be imminent. In an insightful interview with Business Insider, the team shared their ambitious vision for the future, though specifics about the game's title and its integration into the Critical Role universe remain under wraps. Willingham assured fans that the dedicated team is diligently working on the project.

"They'll actually be getting their hands on the stick and controlling the outcome of the story, changing what might be possible from not just some of their favorite characters, but new offerings in the world of Exandria," Willingham explained, giving a glimpse into the interactive nature of the upcoming video game spinoff.

Willingham, a prominent actor and one of Critical Role's stars, co-founded the company alongside fellow voice acting talents such as Liam O'Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, and Matthew Mercer, among others. Since its launch, the D&D show has evolved into a vast universe of creative endeavors, including the popular Amazon Prime Video series, Critical Role: The Legend of Vox Machina.

The forthcoming Critical Role video game will complement its existing projects without necessarily tying directly into them. Back in December 2024, Willingham shared with Rolling Stone that the team was in "active pursuit" of developing a Critical Role video game spinoff, noting that they were nearing the end of a multi-year journey. Whether the game will follow one of the group's established campaigns or introduce an original narrative within the world of Exandria is yet to be determined.

The team initially anticipated making an announcement by the end of 2024 or early 2025. Now, as we progress into the third month of the year, the announcement seems to be right around the corner.

"Those collaborations we’ve had with various partners have been little toe dips in the pool just to see how it feels," Willingham told Rolling Stone. "You know, there’s a lot of upheaval in the interactive space right now. And we’ve seen studios sort of bear and weather those strains. It’s about trying to become smarter about it and finding out how we might fit into that larger ecosystem."

While no release date for the Critical Role video game has been disclosed yet, fans can look forward to more details on The Legend of Vox Machina Season 4 in the meantime.
