Larian Studios celebrated Baldur's Gate 3's anniversary by unveiling a fascinating collection of player statistics, revealing intriguing choices and playstyles. These insights, shared on X (formerly Twitter), offer a captivating glimpse into the community's adventures in the Forgotten Realms.
Romantic Pursuits in the Forgotten Realms
The statistics highlight romance as a significant aspect of many players' journeys. A staggering 75 million companion kisses were recorded, with Shadowheart leading the pack at 27 million, followed by Astarion (15 million) and Minthara (169,937). Act 1's celebratory night saw 32.5% of players choosing Shadowheart, 13.5% opting for Karlach, and 15.6% choosing solitude. By Act 3, Shadowheart's popularity soared, with 48.8% experiencing her final romance scene, compared to 17.6% with Karlach and 12.9% with Lae'zel.
More adventurous players engaged in romantic encounters with Halsin (658,000 players), with 70% preferring his human form and 30% his bear form. Remarkably, 1.1 million players pursued romance with the Emperor, with a preference for the Dream Guardian form (63%) over the mind flayer tentacles (37%).
Whimsical Adventures and Quirky Choices
Beyond the epic narrative, players indulged in lighter moments. A surprising 1.9 million players transformed into cheese wheels, showcasing the game's humorous elements. Friendly dinosaurs welcomed 3.5 million visitors, while 2 million players freed Us from the Colony, demonstrating a fondness for unconventional side quests. Even the Dark Urge showed a surprising softer side, with at least 3,777 players finding a way to spare Alfira, indirectly fostering the spread of lute rock.
Animal companions were also popular. Scratch, the loyal canine, received over 120 million pets, while the Owlbear Cub garnered over 41 million. Interestingly, 141,600 players attempted to pet His Majesty, the cat—the same number who conquered Honour Mode.
Character Creation and Class/Race Preferences
A significant 93% of players opted to create custom characters, highlighting the appeal of personalized heroes. Among pre-made characters, Astarion (1.21 million players) was the most popular, followed by Gale (1.20 million) and Shadowheart (0.86 million). The enigmatic Dark Urge inspired 15% of custom character creations.
The Paladin class reigned supreme, chosen by nearly 10 million players. The Sorcerer and Fighter classes followed closely, each exceeding 7.5 million. Other classes, including Barbarian, Rogue, Warlock, Monk, and Druid, also had considerable representation. Rangers and Clerics had lower numbers, with Rangers under 5 million and Clerics even fewer.
Elves were the most popular race (over 12.5 million), followed by Half-Elves and Humans (both at 12.5 million). Tieflings, Drow, and Dragonborn also exceeded 7.5 million. Half-Orcs, Githyanki, and Dwarves had less representation but still exceeded 2.5 million, while Gnomes and Halflings were chosen by fewer than 2.5 million players each. Certain class-race combinations were particularly popular, reflecting player preferences and character synergies.
Epic Achievements and Narrative Outcomes
141,660 players conquered Honour Mode, demonstrating remarkable skill. Conversely, 1,223,305 playthroughs ended in defeat, with 76% of players deleting their saves and 24% continuing in custom mode.
Significant narrative choices included betraying the Emperor (1.8 million players), convincing Orpheus to remain a mind flayer (329,000 players), and killing the Netherbrain (3.3 million players), with 200,000 involving Gale's sacrifice. A rare outcome saw 34 players experience Avatar Lae'zel's self-sacrifice after rejection by Vlaakith.
These statistics paint a vivid picture of the Baldur's Gate 3 community, showcasing the diverse ways players have experienced the game, from grand achievements to humorous side quests and romantic entanglements.
