The Evolution of the Dungeon Faction in Heroes of Might Magic Olden Era

For years, the Dungeon faction - often called the Warlocks' domain - has captivated players while fitting perfectly into Heroes of Might & Magic: Olden Era's storyline. When we first set foot in Jadame, we encountered creatures intrinsically linked to this faction, each with their own sovereign territories across the continent. This rich foundation allowed the development team to create a faction that honors its legacy while introducing fresh innovations.

The Soul of the Dungeon Faction

Reduced to its core identity, the Dungeon faction embodies "might" and "exiles" throughout the series. Our return to Enroth's realm gives us the chance to reinterpret these feared warlocks, drawing inspiration from Jadame's mythology (especially Might and Magic VIII) to craft the Alvaric Pact's reimagined vision for the faction.

What once were considered monstrous beings now fight alongside crimson-skinned dark elves - historically ostracized for their utilitarian philosophies. Together they forge strength through shrewd alliances, commerce, and calculated agreements, marking a dramatic evolution from previous iterations.

The Faction's Changing Face

The Heroes franchise has consistently featured warlocks and ruthless commanders at the heart of playable factions, though each chapter presented them uniquely:

  • Heroes I & II - Followers of Lord Alamar and King Archibald pursued dominance, assembling creatures that shared their hunger for power
  • Heroes III - Nighon's warlords operated on might-makes-right principles, scheming from subterranean lairs while plotting Antagarich's conquest
  • Heroes IV - Chaotic mages and cutthroats occupied Axeoth's marshlands, mustering outlaws to carve domains in the newborn world
  • Heroes V-VII - Ashan's dark elves entered dark pacts with Dragon-Goddess Malassa and the underworld, spinning webs of deception
