In an interview with Famitsu, preceding the PC launch of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, producer Yoshinori Kitase and director Naoki Hamaguchi announced that Part 3's development is progressing without delays. Hamaguchi confirmed that work began immediately following Rebirth's completion, remaining on schedule since the project's inception. He expressed confidence in the upcoming release, stating, "We are progressing without any delay from the schedule we planned when we launched the remake project, so we hope you will look forward to it."
Kitase, in an earlier statement before Rebirth's PlayStation 5 release, had already indicated the main scenario's completion. He now confirms its finalization, expressing satisfaction with the result. He described the story's completion as fulfilling a key objective: "I gave it [the storywriting] to Nomura (FF7 Rebirth Creative Director, Tetsuya Nomura) as homework to conclude the remake project, while respecting the original and providing a sense of satisfaction that wasn't felt in the original. That was finally completed at the end of the year, and the scenario for the third installment was completed there." He is confident this conclusion will resonate strongly with fans.
Initial Concerns Regarding Rebirth's Reception
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, released earlier this year, achieved widespread critical acclaim and positive player reception. However, Kitase and Hamaguchi admitted to Famitsu that they initially harbored concerns about its reception, particularly following the success of the first installment. Kitase stated, "I was worried about how it would resonate with players and game fans because it was a remake and the second in a trilogy," but ultimately, the positive response boosted their confidence for the final chapter. Hamaguchi added, "In that sense, I think we have done our job of creating a good atmosphere for the third installment." Director Hamaguchi's "logic-based approach" to development, detailed in a separate Automaton interview, involves incorporating player feedback strategically while maintaining the overall vision.
The Rise of PC Gaming
The team also addressed the growing popularity of PC gaming. Kitase highlighted the industry trend towards simultaneous or near-simultaneous PC releases, driven by rising development costs and the need to reach a broader market. He emphasized the global reach of PCs compared to consoles, stating, "As for PCs, there are no borders, so I think it's inevitable that PC versions will be released in order to allow more people to play."
Hamaguchi explained that this shift influenced the decision to prioritize a faster PC port for Rebirth compared to the first game. He noted, "I feel like the flow of game users in the world has changed a lot there. That's why we focused on making the PC version of FFVII Rebirth shorter than the period when the PC version of FFVII Remake was released."
The positive reception of Rebirth, coupled with the completed storyline for Part 3, suggests a promising conclusion to the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy. The possibility of a quicker PC release for the final installment further enhances anticipation for fans worldwide.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is available now on PC via Steam and PlayStation 5. The first installment, Final Fantasy VII Remake, is available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, and PC via Steam.
