Everything We Learned About Okami 2 From Our Exclusive Interview With its Creators

Author: Ellie Mar 16,2025

We recently interviewed the developers behind the upcoming Okami sequel in Osaka, Japan. Our two-hour conversation with Clover's director Hideki Kamiya, Capcom producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, and Machine Head Works producer Kiyohiko Sakata delved into their vision for the sequel, its origins, and what fans can expect.

You can read or watch the full interview here, but below are some key highlights for Okami fans:

Developed in RE Engine

The biggest revelation? The sequel is being built using Capcom's RE Engine. This powerful engine allows the team to realize aspects of their original vision for the first Okami that were previously unattainable with older technology. While many at Clover lack RE Engine experience, this is where partner studio Machine Head Works steps in.

Ex-Platinum Developers Involved

Rumors of talent moving from PlatinumGames have circulated. While specifics weren't revealed, Kamiya hinted at the involvement of former Platinum and Capcom developers working on the sequel through Machine Head Works.

A Long-Awaited Sequel

Capcom's interest in an Okami sequel is not new. While the original game's initial sales were modest, its continued success across platforms prompted Capcom to consider a sequel. However, as Hirabayashi explained, key personnel and timing were crucial factors.

A Direct Sequel

This is a true sequel, directly continuing the story from the first game. We won't spoil anything for those unfamiliar with the original, but rest assured, there's plenty of story potential to explore.

Amaterasu's Return

Yes, that's Amaterasu in the trailer.

Okamiden Acknowledged

The developers acknowledge Okamiden and its fanbase, but also recognize that it didn't fully meet everyone's expectations. The new sequel aims to directly continue the story of the original Okami.

Kamiya Monitors Fan Feedback

Kamiya actively engages with fan feedback on social media, understanding their expectations. However, he emphasizes that the team aims to create the best possible game, not simply fulfill every request.

Kondoh's Musical Return

Rei Kondoh, composer of several tracks for the original Okami, including the iconic "Rising Sun," composed the arrangement heard in the Game Awards trailer. This suggests his potential involvement in the sequel's soundtrack.

Early Stages of Development

The sequel is still in its early stages. While the early announcement was intentional, the developers request patience, prioritizing quality over speed. Further news may be some time in coming.
