Despite the underwhelming reception of the Halo TV series, Microsoft remains committed to adapting its video game franchises for film and television. Microsoft gaming chief Phil Spencer confirmed this in a recent interview with Variety, hinting at more adaptations in the pipeline. This announcement follows the upcoming release of Minecraft: The Movie, and the successful Fallout series on Prime Video. Spencer acknowledged the lessons learned from both Halo and Fallout, stating that these experiences have built confidence and informed their approach to future projects. He anticipates some misses along the way, but assures fans that more adaptations are on the horizon.

The success of the Fallout series and the anticipated Minecraft movie raises the question of which Xbox game will be adapted next. A live-action Gears of War film and animated series were announced by Netflix in 2022, though updates have been scarce since then.

Speculation abounds. Given Prime Video's success with Fallout, an Elder Scrolls/Skyrim series could be a possibility, though Amazon's current fantasy offerings might suggest otherwise. The unexpected success of Sony's Gran Turismo movie opens the door for a potential Forza Horizon film. Microsoft's acquisition of Activision Blizzard also presents opportunities, perhaps a Call of Duty film or a rebooted Warcraft adaptation, considering previously shelved projects with Netflix. The success of animated films like Mario and Sonic suggests that Crash Bandicoot could lend itself well to a similar treatment. A film or series based on the upcoming Fable reboot (2026) is another intriguing possibility. Even a Halo movie reboot remains a theoretical option.

In contrast, Microsoft's competitors, Sony and Nintendo, are further ahead in this arena. Sony boasts successes like the Uncharted movie, The Last of Us series, and the upcoming second season of Twisted Metal. They also have announced projects like Helldivers 2, a Horizon Zero Dawn movie, a Ghost of Tsushima anime, and a two-season God of War series. Nintendo, meanwhile, enjoys the phenomenal success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, with a sequel and a live-action Legend of Zelda adaptation in development.
