Elden Ring Nightreign: No In-Game Messaging, But Enhanced Asynchronous Features
FromSoftware has confirmed that Elden Ring Nightreign will not include the series' signature in-game messaging system. This decision, according to game director Junya Ishizaki (in a January 3rd interview with IGN Japan), is a practical one. The fast-paced, multiplayer-focused design of Nightreign, with anticipated play sessions of around 40 minutes, leaves insufficient time for players to engage with the messaging system.
The asynchronous messaging system, a hallmark of FromSoftware titles, has been integral to player interaction, offering assistance, misdirection, and humorous commentary. However, its absence in Nightreign aims to streamline the experience and maintain a consistent, intense pace.
While the messaging system is omitted, other asynchronous features are not only returning but also being improved. The bloodstain mechanic, for instance, will be significantly enhanced, allowing players to observe and even loot the ghosts of fallen comrades.
FromSoftware's vision for Nightreign is a "compressed RPG," prioritizing variety and minimizing downtime. This is reflected in the game's planned three-day structure and the removal of the messaging system. The goal is a more focused, consistently intense multiplayer experience, contrasting with the longer, more open-ended gameplay of the original Elden Ring.
Nightreign's 2025 release window was announced at The Game Awards 2024, though a precise launch date remains unconfirmed.
