Ex-Bethesda Dev: Fallout 3 Remaster Could Fix Poor Gunplay

Author: Emma Jan 05,2026

Following the warm reception of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, speculation mounts about which Bethesda title will receive the remaster treatment next. With strong rumors suggesting Fallout 3 could be next (following a 2023 leak), how might Bethesda enhance their acclaimed 2008 post-apocalyptic RPG?

Bruce Nesmith, one of Fallout 3's lead designers, has identified the game's lackluster gunplay as a key area needing improvement in any potential remaster.

In an interview with VideoGamer, Nesmith suggested Fallout 3 Remastered would likely adopt Fallout 4's refined shooting mechanics.

"Fallout 4's combat improvements directly reflect what needed changing from Fallout 3," Nesmith explained.

"The studio invested heavily in overhauling gunplay for Fallout 4 because Fallout 3 marked Bethesda's first attempt at shooter mechanics. The results speak for themselves."

The impressive Oblivion Remastered - developed by Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5 - showcases comprehensive visual and gameplay enhancements. While featuring expected technical upgrades like 4K/60fps support, the project goes further with complete revamps of leveling systems, character creation, combat animations and UI. Additional innovations include expanded dialogue options, refined third-person perspective, and modernized facial animation tech. These substantial changes have led some fans to consider it more remake than remaster, though Bethesda has clarified their deliberate approach.

Nesmith anticipates Fallout 3 Remastered would follow Oblivion's ambitious enhancement blueprint.

"Fallout 3's combat didn't quite measure up to contemporary shooters even at launch," he noted. "It's fundamentally an RPG with shooter elements, not pure run-and-gun gameplay. Fallout 4 made crucial strides here that would naturally carry over."

"Oblivion Remastered doesn't just match Skyrim's 2011 visuals - it surpasses the Anniversary Edition's upgrades in several respects," Nesmith added, describing the project as "essentially Oblivion 2.0."

Bethesda maintains a packed development slate between The Elder Scrolls VI, potential Starfield expansions, ongoing Fallout 76 support, and production for Fallout's New Vegas-themed second season. Fans have much to anticipate in coming years.
