Daniel Vavra, the creator behind the Kingdom Come trilogy and a co-founder of Warhorse Studios, has been highly critical of Unreal Engine, arguing that it struggles to manage complex and expansive open worlds. According to Vavra, this limitation has significantly impacted the development of The Witcher 4, pushing it into what he describes as "production hell."
"Unreal Engine is suitable if your game is set in a desert surrounded by rocks, but for a long time, it couldn't handle trees effectively," Vavra remarked. He further criticized Unreal's Nanite technology, claiming it's inadequate for rendering vegetation. A CD Projekt employee, reportedly in conversation with Vavra, mentioned that the studio has been struggling to replicate scenes that were seamless on the RED Engine.
Vavra questions the decision of studios like CD Projekt to switch from their proprietary engines, like the RED Engine, to Unreal Engine for open-world games. He points out that while Unreal Engine can create stunning visuals, it demands high-end computers—priced in the thousands of euros—which are beyond the reach of most gamers.
