Grinding Gear Games (GGG), the developer behind the eagerly awaited action role-playing game, Path of Exile 2, has announced additional emergency changes in response to the widespread discontent over the Dawn of the Hunt update. This update, which was released earlier this month, introduced the new Huntress class along with five new ascension classes—the Ritualist, Amazon, Smith of Kitava, Tactician, and Lich—as well as over a hundred unique items and expanded crafting options. However, these additions were overshadowed by a significant slowdown in gameplay pace, leading to a surge of negative reviews on Steam, pushing the game's rating to 'mostly negative.'
Players expressed frustration over the elongated boss fights and reduced effectiveness of skills, which they felt turned the game into a "total slog." The community was vocal about the game's stability issues and the drastic reduction in loot drops, which further dampened their gaming experience. Many felt that the forced combo gameplay restricted their freedom to experiment with different builds, a core aspect of what makes an ARPG enjoyable.
In response to the backlash, GGG has rolled out the 0.2.0e update, set for release on April 11. This patch focuses on addressing the overwhelming nature of monster encounters, adjusting their speeds and behaviors to give players more breathing room during combat. Specific changes include:
- Monster Speed Changes: Adjustments to prevent monsters from relentlessly pursuing players, including removing interrupt events on certain attacks and modifying the Haste Aura to not appear on already fast monsters.
- Act-Specific Changes: Modifications to monster behavior and density across Acts 1, 2, and 3 to make encounters more manageable.
- Boss Changes: Tweaks to make boss fights less punishing, such as reducing the number of Chaos Rains in the Viper Napuatzi fight and making Uxmal's fight less annoying.
- Player Minion Changes: Revamping the minion revive timer to prevent it from resetting repeatedly, and improvements to spectre and tamed beast mechanics.
- Other Player Balance: Expanding the usability of Rally support and fixing issues with certain skills.
- Crafting Changes: Completing the addition of mods to runes for caster weapons and introducing a new Blank rune at Renly's shop.
- Performance Improvements: Optimizations to ground foliage to enhance game performance.
GGG has also outlined future changes that will be deployed after the weekend, including enhancements to the charm system, introduction of Stash Tab Affinities for better item organization, and the addition of Atlas Bookmarks for easier navigation. These changes aim to make charms more impactful and provide players with more options and tools to enjoy the game.
The question now is whether these adjustments will be enough to regain the trust and satisfaction of the Path of Exile 2 community. Despite the rocky start, the game's launch saw overwhelming success in terms of player numbers, which has not only brought joy but also additional challenges that have even affected the development of Path of Exile 1. Players are hopeful that GGG will continue to listen and adapt to ensure a more enjoyable gaming experience.
