In a recent interview with EDGE magazine, the developers behind the highly anticipated game, Doom: The Dark Ages, unveiled exciting new details about its gameplay. This upcoming title promises to place a significant emphasis on storytelling, with levels designed to be the largest in the series' history, offering players a sandbox-like experience.
Game director Hugo Martin and studio head Marty Stratton shared key insights from their discussion. Unlike previous Doom titles, where much of the backstory was tucked away in text logs, Doom: The Dark Ages will adopt a more direct storytelling approach. The game's atmosphere will immerse players in a medieval setting, toning down futuristic elements. Even the iconic weapons will undergo a design overhaul to seamlessly blend with this new backdrop.

Similar to its predecessors, Doom: The Dark Ages will feature distinct levels, but these will be the most expansive yet. The game will blend the thrill of dungeon crawling with the freedom of open-world exploration. The narrative is structured into "acts," beginning with more confined dungeon areas and gradually expanding into vast landscapes. Players will also have the unique opportunity to control both a dragon and a mech, introducing diverse gameplay dynamics.
A notable addition to the Slayer’s arsenal is a versatile shield that doubles as a chainsaw. This shield can be hurled at enemies and reacts differently based on the type of material it strikes—be it flesh, armor, energy shields, or other substances. Additionally, the shield facilitates a dash attack, enabling rapid movement across the battlefield. With the absence of double jumps and roars from previous games, this shield mechanic becomes vital for player mobility. The shield also introduces a parrying system, with customizable difficulty settings and precise timing requirements.
Innovatively, parrying serves as a "reload" mechanism for melee attacks, while engaging in melee combat replenishes ammunition for primary weapons, echoing the chainsaw mechanic from DOOM Eternal. Melee combat options will include a swift gauntlet, a well-balanced shield, and a more deliberate mace, catering to different play styles and strategic approaches.
